Safety Planning Underway at EUMC

Worshipers at 9:00 last Sunday witnessed an unusual incident, where a seemingly disturbed individual walked into the building and wandered about, including into worship.

His presence reminded us how wide open we are to the community and, as a result, how vulnerable we might be if someone decided to create a disturbance or do someone harm. As a result, our church leaders have decided to design and implement a comprehensive safety plan over the next 4-8 weeks. The plan includes,

  • A June 6, 7:00 planning session to pull together the outline of a plan that will include creation of a Safety/Security Team, new locking/unlocking routines, clarity about how we respond to unusual visitors, and more.
  • A July 11, 7:00 stakeholders' safety meeting at which all church leaders and key volunteers will be oriented to the new safety/security plan.

Please let us know if you would like to be included in either of the planed meetings. In addition, as we design and implement this new strategy over the next two months we are contracting with a local firm to have a professional security presence in our building on Sunday mornings. This will allow an inconspicuous presence to observe and be point person in case a need arises. As the security and safety changes are implemented, please let us hear your feedback so we know we're on the right track.
