The Easter Vigil, sometimes called the Great Vigil, is the brightest jewel of Christian liturgy traced to early Christian times. For much of the Church’s history it has served as the first, and arguably the primary, celebration of Easter. The service, which begins after sunset on the Saturday before Easter, consists of four parts that proclaim the universal significance of God’s saving acts in history and anticipate the coming of Christ’s resurrection. The Vigil begins with the Service of Light, where the New Fire and paschal candle are lit. The paschal candle remains present throughout the entire service and reminds us that Christ came as a light shining in darkness (John 1:5). Next is the Service of The Word, which will take place in Kennedy Hall, where we’ll experience some of the great lessons of the Old Testament; stories of God’s salvation throughout history. We’ll then move to the sanctuary for the Service of Water. In the earliest years of the Christian church, baptisms commonly took place at the vigil as well as the welcoming of new members. Baptism unites us to Christ in his death and in his resurrection. Finally comes the Service of the Bread and Cup. The risen Lord invites us to share in the new life he brings by sharing the feast which he has prepared. We thus look forward to the great messianic feast of the kingdom of God when the redeemed from every time and place “will come from the east and the west, and from the north and south, and sit at table in the kingdom of God” (Luke 13:29).
The service is designed to be family friendly and particularly welcoming to kids. It is a wonderful tradition of the church that we look forward to bringing to our community at Edmonds United Methodist Church. Come join.
